JobTread gets one big thing right: the estimate becomes the budget, and every cost lands against a budget line, so the margin is visible while the job is still running. If that's working for you, stay. People look for an alternative for one of four reasons: the price for a small crew, the lack of a free trial, a setup that only pays off if every purchase goes through it, or the opposite problem, having outgrown it.
Disclosure: we make Obra. It's the last entry below, and the entry says where it's the wrong choice. Prices are list prices checked on the vendors' own pages on October 20, 2026, before promotions and rounded; they change.
What JobTread costs, and what you get
JobTread has one plan with every feature: estimating, budgets, purchase orders, scheduling, time tracking, customer, sub and vendor portals, QuickBooks Online, and free implementation with a success rep. It's $199 a month with one internal user, then $20 for each internal user from the second to the tenth ($16 on annual billing), and 20% off on annual billing. Portal users are free, and field crew who only upload photos, write daily notes, see the schedule or check off tasks can be added free.
For a crew of three internal users, that's about $239 a month, with no free trial; monthly plans have a 30-day money-back guarantee instead.
First decide which way you're moving
- To something bigger, because you want unlimited users and a client-facing suite: Buildertrend.
- To the same kind of suite for less, or with a trial: Contractor Foreman or Buildern.
- To estimating first, because winning the bid is the bottleneck: Buildxact or Handoff.
- To someone doing the migration for you: Projul.
- To something smaller, because what you really used was the estimate, the budget and the costs against it: Obra.

Buildertrend
What you get. One plan with no feature tiers, unlimited users and unlimited projects: estimating, proposals, scheduling, daily logs, selections, a client portal, budgets and job costing, with QuickBooks, Xero, Sage and Gusto integrations.
Why people move to it from JobTread. A bigger, more client-facing system with no per-user math, for builders running five or more projects a year with office staff.
Watch out for. Its pricing page lists a starting price of $499 a month, but the real price depends on your annual construction volume and the onboarding package, and comes from a quote. Paying annually saves 10%. Obra vs Buildertrend has the details.
Contractor Foreman
What you get. On the Plus plan: estimates, scheduling, daily logs, change orders, progress invoicing, retainage, time cards, job costing reports and QuickBooks Online, for up to eight users. AIA G702/G703 billing is on Pro.
Why people move to it from JobTread. Similar breadth for less, plans that grow by user count, and a trial on annual plans.
Watch out for. The cheaper Basic and Standard plans don't include job costing, change orders or progress invoicing. Plus is about $199 a month, or $166 on annual billing. Setup takes weeks.
Buildern
What you get. Estimating with cost catalogs and takeoff, scheduling, bills and purchase orders, change orders, budget tracking with cost codes, a client portal, and two-way QuickBooks and Xero sync. Field workers, subs and clients use it free.
Why people move to it from JobTread. A home builder's suite at a known price, with a client portal that leans toward selections and communication.
Watch out for. The Starter plan is about $250 a month for two seats, and each extra seat is about $90, so a crew of three pays about $340. The trial is seven days.
Buildxact
What you get. Takeoffs, estimating, quote letters, e-signatures and purchase orders from the Foundation plan; schedules, change orders, actual costs, invoicing, a client portal, accounting integrations and the mobile app from Pro. Unlimited users on every paid plan.
Why people move to it from JobTread. Estimating is its strongest part, and unlimited users ends the per-seat argument.
Watch out for. Job costing needs Pro, about $399 a month or $339 on annual billing. The free Go plan is an estimating sampler with a handful of credits.
Handoff
What you get. Estimates written by AI from a typed or spoken scope or uploaded files, with e-signatures, invoices and card or bank payments on every plan. Estimates from site photos, budget tracking, scheduling, time tracking and client portals start on Pro.
Why people move to it from JobTread. Speed on the bid: a description of the job turns into a priced proposal the client can sign and pay a deposit on.
Watch out for. Pro is about $299 a month for five users, $239 billed annually, and comes with a 12-month commitment. The Handoff alternatives guide covers it in more depth.
Projul
What you get. Leads, estimating, invoicing and scheduling on every plan; change orders from Core; job costing, budgets, progress billing, a client portal and QuickBooks Online from Core+. A premium support package with onboarding and data migration is included on most annual plans.
Why people move to it from JobTread. Someone else does the setup, which is the part of any switch most shops dread.
Watch out for. Job costing starts on Core+, about $799 a month or $599 on annual billing. Unlimited users is only on the top plan, and there's no trial.
Obra
What you get. Estimates priced from your own past jobs and price book, signed by the client from a private link; the accepted estimate opens the project with its contract and its cost per category as the budget. Receipts arrive by WhatsApp, email or photo, are read into a draft, and a person confirms them to the job. Change orders, invoices, a reviewed forecast of the final cost and a close. English and Spanish throughout.
When it's the right alternative. When what you used JobTread for was the estimate, the budget and the costs against it, and the costs never reached the budget because the crew's receipts stayed in their trucks. Submitters send receipts from their own phones without a paid seat. A crew of three pays $36 a month, and the free tier runs one active project.
When it isn't. When you rely on purchase orders and vendor bills against budget lines, scheduling, portals, or takeoffs and assemblies. Obra doesn't do them. Obra vs JobTread goes line by line.
